Supervision Received: General supervision received by day Staff Assistant/Lieutenant, Assistant Director, and Director of Public Safety.

Salary: $1,857.51 Bi-Weekly

General Statement of Duties:
Assigned to foot-patrol in all buildings and grounds owned or leased by the University, opens and secures buildings and rooms within buildings, logging this information and notifying appropriate authorities of security and safety problems. Takes necessary action in an emergency to summon assistance, assists police officers and fire fighters, enforces University policies and provides escorts by foot or vehicle. May be assigned to supervise ISO IIs if requested by a supervisor. May maintain attendance records, if assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
Essential:

  • Works primarily on foot patrol with vehicle patrol as assigned.
  • Notifies appropriate authorities of security and safety concerns, takes appropriate action to mitigate (temporary or otherwise) the concern until the appropriate person can permanently solve the issue.
  • Opens and secures buildings and rooms within the buildings.
  • Takes necessary action in an emergency to administer first aid to the level trained.
  • Summons assistance and assists police officers and fire fighters.
  • Enforces University policies.
  • Works with and assists University employees, students and guests in a cooperative manner.
  • Attends and completes training as required.
  • Provides dispatch coverage when necessary, answers phones.
  • Uses radio systems to communicate with others.
  • Prepares reports as required.
  • Operates computer systems at dispatch (CJIS, Simplex, RAVE, Tritech, etc.).
  • Manages parking enforcement and control; issues parking tickets and warnings, reserves parking spots or assists in lot and road closures, issues temporary parking permits.
  • Assists the assigned Lieutenant with vehicle maintenance and upkeep.
  • Assists in daily camera operations, including monitoring, making of discs, checking for functionality and other camera related tasks. Assists in the training of department members in the use of the camera system.
  • Responsible for the daily schedule of the residential hall ISO's. This includes the posting and awarding of overtime.
  • Provides escorts (usually vehicle) for visitors, students, faculty/staff who need them during the scheduled shift hours.
  • All other duties as assigned by department supervisors.

  • Ability to understand, explain and apply the provisions of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to give and follow oral and written instructions, prepare reports, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to adapt to varying work situations.


Qualifications Acquired on Job:

  • Ability to complete a CPR/AED program offered by the Department of Public Safety.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Familiarity and understanding of University rules, regulations and policies relating to the job.


Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in law enforcement, in a governmental police force, or in work involving the protection or security of buildings, equipment or people as a major duty, or
  • Any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below:


Substitutions:

  • An Associate's or higher degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.



License and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Salaries for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining agreements as well as state policies. State job specifications may be found on the Department of Higher Education's webpage .
