Job Description

SUMMARY

In Sutherland Packaging, Inc., Truck Drivers are responsible for ensuring all products are safely and courteously delivered, with all documentation recorded and confirming visual inspection. Truck Drivers make an important contribution to meeting customer commitments and are the face of Sutherland to the customer and to others on the roads. As part of this very important “ambassador” role, Truck Drivers are courteous and respectful at all times and remember that they are representing the company. Truck Drivers work as a cooperative team and report to Sutherland’s Shipping Manager.

Every Truck Driver demonstrates through his or her skills, attitude and behavior responsibility for safely and efficiently supporting in full, on time, quality production and delivery by Sutherland Packaging. Truck Drivers are responsible for keeping their tractors and trailers clean and organized and for ensuring all documentation for their vehicles is accurate, current and available in the vehicle. Every Truck Driver demonstrates respect for others and respect for property at all times at Sutherland, treating others as they would like to be treated. Each employee at Sutherland is also expected to provide any recommendations when appropriate to improve your work and improve safety, efficiency and quality overall at Sutherland Packaging.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Proactively maintain a clean, neat and safe work environment in their tractor, trailer and throughout the shipping area of the plant.
  2. Ensure necessary current documents and GPS equipment are in the truck at all times.
  3. As part of the Truck Driver team, perform the following as directed by the Shipping Manager and in cooperation with other drivers: customer deliveries/returns pick up; vendor drop off/pick up; samples deliveries/pick up; relocate trailers in the yard as needed, deliver or pickup tractors or trailers for repair or service; other as requested.
  4. Inspect tractors and trailers daily for any safety and preventive maintenance checks or other maintenance issues. Report any findings to the Shipping Manager.
  5. Follow up on preventive maintenance.
  6. Immediately report any damage caused by a tractor or trailer to the Shipping Manager.
  7. Verify all documentation is accurate and recorded for all shipments, both as shipping from Sutherland and as delivered to the customer.
  8. When truck is being loaded, serve as an additional quality reviewer by checking that all units shipping are presentable, ensuring that no damaged goods are shipped to any customer.
  9. Check counts as product is offloaded.
  10. Photograph pallets at customer to document as-delivered condition.
  11.  Report any delays in transport or delivery to the Shipping Manager.
  12.  Report to the Shipping Manager any changes in medical conditions or medication that could impact ability to safely drive.
  13.  With full cooperation, assist in the warehouse and the plant when requested.
  14. Other duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills required. This is normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must meet all current DOT and insurance requirements.
  3. Clean driving record.
  4. Two years commercial driving experience.
  5. General knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures and machinery.
  6. Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
  7. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds required.
  8. Ability to speak sufficient English to communicate clearly with supervisors and managers.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves lifting of materials and product up to 40 pounds. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to: eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
